'The
Secret' Controversy Heats Up: Part 2
Does
the Law of Attraction Suggest We Avoid Controversy?
"Are
you enjoying the contrast of this time and place?"
-
typical
introductory words in
Abraham-Hicks "Art of
Allowing" live workshops.
Dear
Ones,
The article that I wrote last week on the topic of the
controversy around 'The Secret' ('The Secret Controversy
Heats Up') clearly struck a nerve.
Most
interesting (to me) were the responses from people who
chastised me (mostly privately) for giving attention
to the
'controversy'.
The
general message was:
"
I thank you for these newsletters that you generate
and appreciate the work you are doing. I feel I must
however, step in and comment on your choice for discussing
the 'controversy'.
We
know that what we focus on grows - what we give attention
to becomes larger. Why then are you giving any 'air
time' to the controversy? "
For
me, dear readers, this query highlights the exact reason
that I am choosing to move into the 'controversy' instead
of
avoiding it.
It
is true that, once we understand the law of attraction
and how it works in our lives, we find that we must
become
very selective in our attention.
As
we look upon things that make us feel good, we strengthen
our bond to them, and as we look upon things that make
us
feel bad we similarly strengthen our bond with those
things
as well.
The
key to understanding how this all works on a very
practical level lies not in 'what' we are looking at,
but
rather, in how we are 'feeling' as we do the looking.
Therefore,
while I do agree that what we focus on expands, I
do not agree with the implied corollary, that what we
'avoid' looking at will disappear.
If
we see something that is not pleasing to us and which
activates an emotion within us and we elect to turn
our heads away and say, 'no, I do not want that' we have
activated the energy nonetheless.
Whether
we are facing it or looking away, if we feel upset,
angry, dismayed or otherwise disempowered by a topic,
pretending that it is not there is like spreading pink
paint
over a situation - it pretties it up but does no logical
good.
Therefore,
being aware that a 'controversy' is brewing, and
wanting to hide out until it blows over is not, for
me, the
most empowered, deliberate response.
And
I do not see 'The Secret' teachers backing away from
a
healthy discussion either.
In
addition to his 'Today Show' appearance on NBC-TV, James
Ray presented his position across from psychology professor
John Norcross on CBS-TV's "The Early Show"
with Harry Smith as a moderator. You can view their
conversation at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zn4EXAETBhA
And
Rev. Michael Beckwith responded to tough questions about
'The Secret' from CBS News' Bill Whitaker. View this
dialogue at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V6wdmFdM4o
Finally,
Larry King has invited Joe Vitale, John Assaraf, James
Ray, Lisa Nichols, and Bob Proctor to respond to critics
live this evening, March 8, 2007 at 9 p.m. EST. (For
more information, visit http://www.cnn.com/larryking
)
For
people who find truth in 'The Secret', now is the time
to celebrate that truth - and get clarity about what
we
would like to see evolve from this point.
For
every critical question that is being put forth by
Secret 'detractors':
~
Where is the science?
~ How does this differ from 'positive thinking'?
~ How can you use the law of attraction to explain tragedies
like child abuse, terrorist acts, Rwanda or the Holocaust?
...a
deep thoughtful response can be brought forth.
Law
of Attraction is not a tool that can be used to cause
everyone to come into harmony and agreement about
everything.
Quite
the opposite - the law of attraction supports
expansion and evolution.
The
questions we can ask ourselves now:
1)
What do we love about 'The Secret' ?
2)
What questions do we want to have answered - what
additional insights do we want to see revealed - in
'The Secret - The Next Step' (due out in August/September
2007)?
While
you share what you love about "The Secret"
(and what you are hoping they will address in the sequel)
in the comments section at
http://choosingprosperity.typepad.com,
I'll be composing my own list which I'll post next week.
Perhaps
'The Secret' producers will take a look at our
compositions and we'll find ourselves actively contributing
to, and 'molding the clay' of, the next Secret DVD.
With
fond appreciation,

Do
you find yourself attracted to the message of 'The Secret',
yet you are not yet effecting real-life, practical results?
Are
you attracted to the notion of 'law of attraction' but
confused by practical considerations (i.e. how can
proponents of the law of attraction say that the law
of
attraction works like magnetism when magnets attract
the
opposite?)
Are
you wanting to explore the practical applications of
'The Secret' with a group of like-minded individuals
from all over the world?
