The
Secret: Arguing Against...
While
Oprah Winfrey expressed open-hearted appreciation of
the content, other mainstream media outlets have been racing
to express their condemnation and disdain.
The New
York Times led the charge on Sunday 2/25

with a story by Allen Salkin in which the author does his
best to find a sordid and sleazy angle to cover.

On Tuesday,
2/27, "The Today Show" invited James Ray to
present a counterpoint to Psychiatrist Gail Saltz in a
segment entitled "The Secret: Self Help or Media Hype".
In
this piece Professor Robert Thompson of Syracuse University
was quoted as saying that sales of the DVD offer evidence
that this is a nation, "at best of great optimists and
at
worst, real suckers."
In this
segment, writer Jerry Adler minced no words with his
opinion that the book, "The Secret", is, "potentially
psychologically harmful, ethically deplorable and
scientifically nonsense."
And when
Gail Saltz and James A. Ray went head to head in
debate, Gail Saltz dismissed the movie as having, "a
dangerous message" that "blames the victim"
while having "no
science to support it".
The Experiments...
While
I have long proposed an experimental approach to help
people challenge their disbelief, in my case I have always
advocated orchestrating conditions and inviting "the
truth
to reveal itself to you."
My most
well-known "experiments" include:
1) my
initial personal experiment - which provided me with
enough evidence that I was able to put my skeptical self 'on
hold' for the past 7 years and which freed me to create an
extraordinary life (you can catch a glimpse of my back story

2) the
grand group experiment that we did last May where
hundreds of participants self-reported significant shifts
in
their perspectives as a result of their personal experiences
(statistical data and participant reports can be

)
On the
other hand...
We can
also find a wave of "so-called" scientific
experiments popping up all over the Internet that are coming
from an entirely different angle. These experimenters
clearly state that their intention is to disprove the
existence of the law of attraction.
Unfortunately,
these "experiments" are fatally flawed from the
start. If the "experimenters" understood the nature
of the scientific method and/or the scientifically validated
phenomenon of the "observer effect" they would know
that a) one can't use the scientific methods to 'disprove'
anything and b) once you announce that you are expecting a
particular result, you have automatically invalidated your
research.
What is
going on?
So why
the powerful backlash?
And isn't
it interesting that comments on blogs - even on
naysayers site's - seem to reflect an educated public which
continues to see much value in the messages behind the DVD.
